About This Model

The Yamaha Motif 6 is the 61-key version of the original Motif, the workstation that launched Yamaha's long-running flagship line and became a studio and stage standard through the 2000s. It uses Yamaha's AWM2 tone generator with an initial touch and aftertouch keyboard, offering 16 internal multitimbral parts plus an A/D part, expandable to 18 with plug-in boards fitted. The onboard sequencer holds around 200,000 notes at 480 clocks per quarter note across 64 songs of 16 tracks, alongside a pattern mode with 64 styles, 16 sections and 128 preset phrases. Hands-on control comes via four assignable sliders, four assignable knobs, pitch bend and modulation wheels, a master volume slider and a rotary encoder, which is a large part of why the Motif remains popular as a controller as well as a sound source. Expansion is generous for its era, with three slots for Modular Synthesis Plug-in Boards, a slot for mLAN8E or AIEB1, two 72-pin SIMM slots for sample memory, SmartMedia card storage and SCSI support for external drives. Connectivity includes stereo main outputs, assignable outputs, two foot controller inputs and a sustain switch input, all on 1/4" jacks.
