About This Model

The Sugden A48 is a British-made stereo integrated amplifier first introduced in 1973, delivering 40 watts per channel into 8Ω on early versions, with later Mk 2 and Mk 3 variants rated at 55-70 watts per channel. Input selection is handled via 10 push-buttons covering Disc (MM phono), Radio, Aux, and Tape sources, making it a versatile hub for a traditional hi-fi system. The phono stage includes a built-in rumble filter, while optional low- and high-frequency filters, alongside bass and treble tone controls offering ±14 dB of adjustment, give considerable control over the sound. A Quiet (loudness) function and Mono/Stereo switching add further flexibility. Later Mk 2 and Mk 3 models used Class A/AB topologies with separate power supplies per channel - a design choice that contributes to the amp's warm, involving character and its reputation among vintage British hi-fi enthusiasts.
