About This Model

The Sony TC-377 is a solid-state stereo open-reel tape recorder manufactured in Japan between 1973 and 1979. It runs at three tape speeds - 1⅞, 3¾, and 7½ ips - and records in 4-track stereo on standard ¼-inch tape, with a three-head configuration (erase, record, and playback) for simultaneous monitoring during recording. At 7.5 ips with SLH tape, it achieves a frequency response of 20Hz-30kHz, wow and flutter of just 0.09%, and a signal-to-noise ratio of 55 dB. The preamp signal path runs directly to transistors without coupling capacitors, a design choice aimed at preserving signal integrity. A practical design touch is the reversible slanted base, which allows the unit to be operated either horizontally or vertically. The TC-377 also supports SQ-encoded quadraphonic playback, and accepts microphone and auxiliary inputs alongside line and headphone outputs.
