About This Model

The Sony MDS-JE500 is a home MiniDisc recording and playback deck released in June 1996, originally retailing at around $600 USD. It holds a notable place in MiniDisc history as the first device to implement Sony's single-chip MD System on Chip, and it debuted ATRAC version 4 - widely regarded as a significant step forward in MiniDisc audio quality. Connectivity is well-specified for a home deck: analogue RCA line inputs and outputs, optical TOSLINK digital input and output, and a 1/4-inch headphone jack, all via gold-plated connectors. Measured performance is strong, with a signal-to-noise ratio of over 96 dB and a frequency response of 5-20,000 Hz ±0.3 dB. Note that the unit does not support MDLP, NetMD, or Hi-MD, so it operates exclusively with standard MiniDisc recordings.
