About This Model

The Roland MC-505 Groovebox, released in 1998, is a self-contained beat production unit combining an 8-track MIDI sequencer, drum machine, and a ROM-based synthesis engine derived from the Roland JV-1080. It offers 64-voice polyphony, 512 preset sounds, 256 user patch slots, and 26 drum kits drawing on classic Roland drum machine samples including the TR-808, TR-909, and CR-78. The sequencer supports patterns up to 32 bars long, with 714 preset patterns and 200 user slots, while a SmartMedia card slot allows expansion of patch and pattern memory. Six audio outputs give flexible routing options alongside MIDI In and Out, and onboard effects include reverb, delay, and 24 EFX types. The D-Beam infrared controller adds hands-free real-time modulation, and the Megamix function enables live blending of patterns from different songs on the fly.
