About This Model
The Quad FM4 is an FM-only stereo tuner made by the Acoustical Manufacturing Co. Ltd. of Huntingdon, produced from 1982 to 1995 and styled to partner the Quad 44 preamplifier and 405-2 power amplifier. Despite fears at launch that Quad had gone fully digital, the FM4 remained an analogue tuner beneath the case, with the digital chip handling only the display and preset frequency storage. The front panel carries a rotary tuning control, seven station preset buttons and a Tune button for saving to memory, with automatic AFC and muting, bar graph signal strength and centre tuning indicators, and an FM stereo indicator on a digital display housed in a green metal case. The rear provides a 75 ohm coaxial aerial connector, a DIN line output socket and an unswitched AC outlet. Frequency range is 88-108MHz with sensitivity of 2.7µV mono and 25µV stereo, in a slim chassis measuring 321 x 207 x 64mm. The design and engineering were exceptional and the FM4 remains in demand today.
