About This Model

The E-MU ESI 4000 is a rackmount digital sampler built around a sample-based subtractive synthesis architecture. It offers up to 64-voice polyphony in mono or 32-voice polyphony in stereo, driven by 64 digital 6-pole filters across 19 filter types. Sampling is handled at 22.05 kHz or 44.1 kHz via analog inputs with 16-bit resolution, while the Turbo option adds 18-bit A/D conversion through S/PDIF digital I/O. Standard connectivity includes stereo main and sub analog outputs, stereo analog sample inputs, a headphone output, MIDI In/Out/Thru, and a 50-pin SCSI port for library access - including compatibility with Akai S-1000/1100 and E-MU EIIIx/ESI-32/EmaxII sample libraries. Onboard memory starts at 4 MB and expands to 128 MB via standard 72-pin SIMMs, with support for up to 999 samples and 256 presets. DSP tools include time compression/expansion, parametric EQ, cross-fade looping, and automatic correlation, making it a capable and flexible centrepiece for sample-based production.
