About This Model
The Slapback Audio Scintillator is a 1U stereo rack-mount psychoacoustic enhancer and aural exciter, designed by Paul White and manufactured in the United Kingdom in the late 1970s. Rather than processing the full signal, it generates even harmonics selectively across the upper mids and high frequencies, adding clarity, separation, and sparkle to a mix while leaving the unprocessed proportion of the signal entirely intact. Three front-panel knobs - Drive, Effect, and Tune - give straightforward control over input level, dry/wet balance, and the starting frequency at which the enhancement begins. Connections are via quarter-inch unbalanced jacks for stereo in and out, and the unit runs on 220 volt power. A rare piece of British studio engineering, the Scintillator remains a distinctive tool for anyone seeking transparent top-end enhancement without colouring the body of the sound.
