About This Model
The Shure SM58 is a dynamic cardioid vocal microphone built around a transformer-coupled capsule with a frequency response of 50Hz to 15kHz - shaped to flatter vocals with a brightened midrange and a bass rolloff that counters proximity effect. Its cardioid polar pattern focuses on the sound directly in front while rejecting off-axis noise, making it well-suited to live performance and recording. The handheld metal chassis houses an internal pneumatic shock-mount system that isolates the capsule from handling vibration, and a built-in spherical foam filter reduces plosives. Connection is via a standard XLR output at 150Ω impedance, requiring no phantom power. The steel ball grille is removable, and the capsule itself is a user-replaceable component - a practical feature that extends the microphone's working life considerably.
