About This Model
The Studiospares RED800 is a transformer-isolated 8-channel microphone splitter, with each input on the front linked to a direct output and an isolated output at the rear of the unit. Problems with hums and buzzes are eliminated by the transformer isolation and by individual channel ground lift switches, while a -40dB attenuation pad prevents line level signals from overloading the circuitry. Front panel switches allow individual channels to be set to provide two balanced outputs by linking the input of a pair of channels, so channel 3 can be linked to channel 4, for example. The "link out" connection is direct and passes phantom power, while the "out" is a transformer-isolated duplicate. That distinction is the practical heart of the unit: the direct feed keeps phantom power flowing to condenser microphones at the front-of-house console, while the isolated feed sends a clean, galvanically separated copy to a recording rig, monitor desk or broadcast truck without the two systems fighting over ground. It sits within Studiospares' RED series alongside the RED505 Line Splitter, RED506 Microphone Splitter, RED503 Passive Line Combiner and RED504 Microphone Combiner, a range built to a consistent specification using die-cast aluminium with metal endplates carrying the sockets and switches, intended to survive heavy handling in studio and touring use.
