About this model
The Fostex E-16 is a 16-track analog tape recorder built around half-inch magnetic tape, designed for serious multitrack recording in project and home studio environments. It features a three-head configuration - erase, record, and play - enabling simultaneous recording and off-tape monitoring, which was a key workflow advantage for tracking sessions. The unit runs at 3¾ ips and 7½ ips tape speeds, delivers a frequency response of 40Hz to 20kHz, and achieves a signal-to-noise ratio of 65dB. A direct-drive capstan motor keeps transport speed stable, while Permalloy heads and solid-state electronics underpin its signal integrity. I/O is via unbalanced RCA connections at -10dBV nominal line level, making it straightforward to integrate with project studio gear. VU meters provide real-time level monitoring across tracks. The E-16 saw use in professional and semi-professional contexts alike, with notable users including Enya.
