The Ashly SC-50 is a mono VCA-based peak limiter and compressor designed for outboard dynamics control in professional audio applications. It combines two distinct functions: peak limiting, which places a hard ceiling on signal levels, and compression, which provides smooth, continuous dynamic range control. The unit features independent controls for threshold, ratio, attack, and release, along with a double time constant release action for natural-sounding dynamic behaviour. Its line-level inputs and outputs can be used balanced or unbalanced, and dedicated patch points allow for frequency-selective detection and accurate stereo or quad tracking when units are linked. A rugged 16-gauge steel chassis underpins the build, and the design is documented for extremely low noise and distortion throughout the signal path.
